SEASON AT A GLANCE: Spiker set school records of 4:12.19 in the 1,600 meters and 8:56.66 in the 3,200. The 1,600 time ranks third on the yearly state list and the 3,200 clocking ranks second on the national outdoor list and sixth on the all-time region list.

WEEK AT A GLANCE: Spiker won the 3,200 in 9:02.00 to become Ventura’s second state champion and first since Jim Fulkerson won the 220-yard low hurdles in 1920. Spiker led through 2,000 meters, dropped to fifth with 600 left and sprinted past Marcus Chandler of San Diego Serra and Augie Escobar of Villa Park in the homestretch. “I told myself to stay behind [Chandler] until the last 100,” Spiker said. “And then I just tried to go.”

Maureen LeCocq

SCHOOL: Chaminade

YEAR: Senior

SPORT: Softball

SEASON AT A GLANCE: LeCocq finished with a 23-2 record, 19 shutouts and a 0.16 earned-run average. On Tuesday, she received the Gatorade Circle of Champions national softball player of the year award. LeCocq has accepted a scholarship to Stanford.

WEEK AT A GLANCE: The right-hander led Chaminade to the Southern Section Division IV championship by hurling two-hit shutouts against Fullerton Rosary in the semifinals and Bloomington in the final. She finished with 14 consecutive shutouts and 92 consecutive scoreless innings.
