Bill Would Name Stretch of Freeway for Slain Officer

A bill was introduced this week in the state Legislature that, if approved, would name a stretch of the Ventura Freeway in memory of slain Glendale Police Investigator Charles A. Lazzaretto, Assemblyman Scott Wildman (D-Glendale) announced.

The portion of the freeway between the Glendale and Golden State freeways would be dedicated as the “Glendale Police Investigator Charles A. Lazzaretto Memorial Freeway” under the proposed resolution. Signs facing both directions would identify the dedicated portion of the freeway and be paid for through private donations.

“I think it’s extremely important that we validate the commitment of the police officers who have saved our lives, and this is a fitting memorial for Officer Lazzaretto,” Wildman said.

Lazzaretto, a veteran Glendale police officer, was fatally shot on May 27, 1997, by a suspect wanted in the attempted murder of a Glendale resident.

He is survived by his wife, Annamaria, and two sons.
