Heinberg in Sectional Final

Fourth-seeded Ryan Heinberg of Agoura Hills upset top-seeded K.C. Corkery of Manhattan Beach, 6-3, 6-3, on Saturday to advance to the boys’ 16 division championship match today in the U.S. Tennis Assn.’s Southern California junior sectional at Los Caballeros Sports Village in Fountain Valley.

Heinberg will play ninth-seeded Joseph Kao of Fullerton in the final.

Top-seeded Sergy Vagramian of Glendale beat third-seeded Samuel Tadevosian, also of Glendale, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5, and will play No. 5-seeded Scott Hohenstein of Anaheim in the boys’ 12 final.

No. 2-seeded Bernadette Bayani of Simi Valley will play top-seeded Candice Fuchs of San Diego in the girls’ 18 final after beating third-seeded Abigail Spears of Valley Center, 6-4, 6-4.

Erica Sauer of Somis, second seeded in girls’ 14s, beat Malvina De La Canal of Los Angeles, 6-3, 6-4.

FOOTBALL

* Granada Hills won the Beverly Hills passing tournament Saturday behind the play of quarterback Jason Winn and tight end Tommy Garagliano.

The Highlanders defeated Beverly Hills, 28-8, in the final after having lost to the Normans, 22-18, in pool play.

Winn, a 6-foot-3 senior, showed that he ranks among the top returning quarterbacks for 1999.

MISCELLANY

* Principal Jim Staunton of Huntington Beach High and John Myers, assistant superintendent of the Huntington Beach School District, were interviewed Saturday by the Southern Section executive committee, which is seeking to replace retiring Commissioner Dean Crowley.

Others scheduled to interview Saturday were assistant section commissioners Karen Hellyer and Bill Clark and Principal Clark Stephens of Liberty Christian.
