A Santa Ana man has been charged with murder in the slaying of his estranged wife’s roommate, and the woman has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

Carl E. Lanier, 29, whom police arrested over the weekend, was charged Monday with killing Edward Bruce Horn, 61, whose body was found Thursday stuffed in the closet of his Santa Ana mobile home.

Also Monday, Lanier’s estranged wife, Anne Marie Rodgers, 35, who was Horn’s live-in caretaker, died from a gunshot wound to her head. Police found her Friday in Horn’s car in Riverside County.

Rodgers was considered a suspect in Horn’s slaying, Santa Ana Police Sgt. Raul Luna said.

Luna said investigators are trying to determine if the gun Rodgers used to shoot herself may have been the one used to kill Horn. Luna wouldn’t provide more details on Horn’s death, except to say Horn was shot in the torso.

Police know of no motive for the killing and are continuing the investigation, Luna said.

Lanier is scheduled to be arraigned July 16.
