Gunny Powers Granada Hills Past South Gate in Opener, 12-2

Peter Gunny had four hits, three runs batted in and three runs for Granada Hills High in a 12-2 victory over South Gate on Tuesday in pool play of the San Fernando Valley tournament at Granada Hills.

The game was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Ryan Braun had three hits, including a two-run home run in the third, and scored three runs for the Highlanders (1-0).

In other San Fernando tournament games:

Birmingham 11, Eagle Rock 0--Frankie Mendieta had two doubles and a triple, three RBIs and two runs for the Patriots in a game called in the fifth inning because of the 10-run rule at Birmingham.

Raul Campos had two hits and two runs for the Patriots (1-0).

Grant 5, Huntington Park 1--Felipe Tetelboin hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning and Marc Soulema added a solo home run for the Lancers (1-0) at Grant.

Mike Marble (1-0) struck out five in pitching four-hitter.

San Fernando 7, L.A. Wilson 5--The Tigers rallied for four runs in the sixth inning to erase a 5-3 deficit at San Fernando.

Jose Montes’ two-run home run highlighted the Tiger sixth.

Francisco Enriques had two triples and drove in two runs, and Jess Moreno (1-0) had three hits and pitched two innings of one-hit relief, striking out five for San Fernando (1-0).

Cleveland 12, Canoga Park 2--Tony Cicero drove in five runs with two doubles and a triple, and scored three runs for the Cavaliers at Cleveland.

Dan Palardy (1-0), who struck out six batters in four innings, had two hits and scored three runs.

In another baseball game:

Reseda 3, Hollywood 2--Chris Coleman’s two-run single in the seventh inning gave the Regents a second-round victory in the L.A. Umpires Assn. tournament at Reseda.

Omar Valdez (1-0) pitched the final two innings for Reseda (3-0), which will play Fremont in a semifinal game Thursday.

SOFTBALL

Kennedy 5, Sylmar 2--Patty Del Real pitched a two-hitter, struck out eight, walked two and hit a batter for the Golden Cougars in a nonconference game at Brand Park.

Christina Garcia had two hits and scored twice for Kennedy (1-0).
