Irvine Outlasts Northridge in Five Games

Senior Mike Rupp had 36 kills and five aces to help UC Irvine defeat Cal State Northridge, 13-15, 15-13, 15-11, 5-15, 15-13, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball match Wednesday night at Irvine.

Eckhard Walter had 26 kills and Junior Mosones had 20 kills and nine digs for Northridge (2-10, 1-9 in MPSF play). John Baxter had 79 assists for the Matadors.

Rupp closed out his second consecutive match with a service ace for Irvine (7-7, 5-6), which is ranked 15th in the nation.

BASEBALL

The Master’s 6, Cal Baptist 5--Aaron Penberthy singled in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning for the Mustangs (13-4-1) in a nonconference game at Master’s.

Penberthy, hitless entering the ninth, has hit safely in 18 consecutive games.

Kurt Fillmore relieved in the ninth and left the bases loaded, earning his first victory of the season.

SOFTBALL

Antelope Valley 9, Chaffey 2--Nadine Klemenz’s two-run single highlighted a four-run first inning for the Marauders (9-3) against Chaffey (6-8) in a Foothill Conference opener at Antelope Valley.

Kristi DiMarco, Amber Slaton and Missy Goldwater each had two hits for Antelope Valley.
