City Sets Leagues for Next Four Years

The Los Angeles Unified School District has given final approval for the formation of new sports leagues in the City Section beginning this fall.

The league configurations will last for four years and involve all boys’ and girls’ sports. Final league names have not been chosen.

League 7, expected to be named the East Valley League, will consist of Canoga Park, Grant, Hollywood, North Hollywood, Poly and Verdugo Hills.

League 8, likely the Mid-Valley League, will include Kennedy, Monroe, Reseda, Van Nuys, San Fernando and Sylmar.

League 9, probably the West Valley League, will be comprised of Birmingham, Chatsworth, Cleveland, El Camino Real, Granada Hills and Taft.

VOLLEYBALL

Alvin Lamarre, who guided Crespi to the Mission League co-championship last season, will not coach the Celts next year.

Lamarre, who has been the Celts’ coach for four years, will spend the school year at Tufts University in Massachusetts on a fellowship at the Wright Center for Innovative Science Education.

Lamarre expects to return to Crespi for the 2000-01 season.

SOCCER

Erin Wade, a North Hollywood High midfielder, and Lori Sievers, a forward from Van Nuys, have been selected co-players of the year in the Mid-Valley League.

HOCKEY

The West Valley Wolves, who train at the Ice-O-Plex in North Hills, won the Southern California juniors title with an 8-7 victory over the Beach Cities Lightening in overtime on Saturday night at Anaheim Glacial Gardens.

Daniel Kim scored six minutes into overtime and Arvin Shabazian had four goals for the Wolves.

FOOTBALL

Moorpark High has dropped Santa Paula from its schedule and instead will play Ventura in the second week of the season.

Ventura also added Clovis West to its schedule.

HONORS

Walter N. Prince of Northridge will receive an Award of Distinction from the Water Ski Hall of Fame on April 24 at Cypress Gardens in Winter Haven, Fla.
