Voeltz Leads Westlake to Hart Title

Junior right-hander Erin Voeltz pitched a four-hitter and struck out 16, and Westlake High defeated Hart, 3-1, in eight innings to claim the championship of the Hart softball tournament Saturday at Newhall Park.

Voeltz (3-0), who struck out the first seven batters, allowed Hart (4-1) only an unearned run in the fifth inning. She walked two.

Voeltz got the decision in a 9-3 victory over Valencia earlier in the day and was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

In the title game, Tiffany Meadows hit a first-inning solo home run and finished with two hits for Westlake (4-0).

In the first game, Voeltz pitched a three-hitter, striking out eight and walking one. Westlake scored six runs in the fifth inning on five hits and two Valencia errors.

Melinda Williams had two of Valencia’s three hits.

Hart reached the final by defeating Highland, 6-5, when Carly Caldaronello singled in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.

In another Hart tournament game:

Highland 5, Valencia 3--Natalie Rawson had three hits and the Bulldogs (3-2) won the third-place game.

Keri Pulcifer and Angie D’Errico each added two hits for Highland.

Newbury Park 4, John Glenn 0--Katie Stokx (2-0) struck out 11 and walked one while pitching a no-hitter for the top-ranked Panthers (3-0) in the quarterfinals of the Downey tournament.

Stokx, who hit a two-run home run in the sixth, missed a perfect game by giving up a walk in the first inning.

Thousand Oaks 8, Santa Fe Springs 7--Brandi Cope hit a two-run home run with two out in the bottom of the seventh to give the Lancers (6-0) a victory in a semifinal game of the Downey tournament.

Kennedy 3, Calabasas 1--Patty Del Real struck out 11 and walked one in six innings and the Golden Cougars (8-0) won a semifinal game of the Simi Valley tournament.

Briana Mathiesen had two hits, driving in two runs for Kennedy.

San Marino 5, Flintridge Sacred Heart 1--Lindsey Andrews (3-0) pitched a three-hitter for San Marino (6-0) in the championship game of the Westridge tournament.

Tiffany Church (5-1) allowed four earned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and five walks for Flintridge Sacred Heart (6-1), which defeated La Salle, 8-3, in a semifinal game.

Lacey Smale had four hits, including a home run, for Sacred Heart in the semifinal.

Mater Dei 3-7, Chaminade 0-0--With All-American pitcher Maureen LeCocq sidelined because of a dislocated shoulder, freshman Christina Lupacchini held defending Division I champion Mater Dei (2-0) to just three runs, but the Eagles (0-3) managed only two hits in a nonleague doubleheader at Chaminade Junior High.

Chaminade had both of its hits in the first game. In the second game, Tia Bollinger of Mater Dei struck out 11 and walked one in a no-hitter.
