Prince’s Big Throw Helps Chapman Win in Baseball

Chapman’s baseball team continued its tear with a 3-2 victory over Massachusetts-Dartmouth, the 12th-ranked team in the Division III preseason poll, Thursday at Hart Park.

Right fielder Domonek Prince threw out the potential tying run at the plate in the top of the ninth to end the game for Chapman (17-1).

UMass-Dartmouth is 4-4.

Eric Albright’s home run highlighted a two-run seventh which gave the Panthers the lead, 3-2, in the seventh.

Winning pitcher Jeff Blitstein (6-0) went 7 1/3 innings, giving up one earned run and seven hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Eric Hayden pitched the final 1 2/3 innings to earn his second save.

Chapman also has defeated No. 2 Montclair State (N.J.) twice and No. 24 Allentown (Pa.).

Unranked Chapman plays No. 17 North Central (Ill.) Tuesday and No. 7 East Connecticut St. next Thursday at Hart Park.

A new poll is expected early next week, according Chapman Coach Rex Peters.

In the Kia Classic softball tournament:

CS Fullerton 12, Utah 0 (5 innings, mercy rule)--Christy Robitaille (4-3) pitched a two-hitter and Stephanie Little drove in six runs for the Titans (15-9). Monica Lucatero and Yasmin Mossadeghi had two hits and two RBIs each for Cal State Fullerton.

At the Sun West tournament:

Chapman wins twice--Stephanie Carew had three hits, including a two-run single in the top of the seventh to highlight a three-run inning in Chapman’s a 7-2 victory over Puget Sound (Wash.). Erin Peterson hit a two-run home run for Puget Sound (12-4).

Chapman (16-1) also defeated Cal State San Bernardino (9-13), 4-1, behind a five-hitter by Tiffany Hoskins.

In nonconference softball:

Dordt College 8-4, Concordia 1-0--Concordia gave up five runs in the first inning of the opener against the visitors from Sioux Center, Iowa. Dawn Davidson and Melsissa Naylon each had two hits in the first game for Concordia (11-11).

In the second game, Concordia again fell behind in the first inning, 2-0, and despite getting six hits, could not push across a run.

Hope International 14-14, Nyack (N.Y.) 0-6--Both games were called after five innings because of the mercy rule. Leslie Graves went four for four with eight RBIs and pitcher Charity McMillan (5-4) threw a one-hitter with eight strikeouts for Hope International (14-10) in the first games.

At the NCAA fencing championships:

Reyes places 23rd in foil--Cal State Fullerton’s Ariel Reyes placed 23rd in the men’s foil. The Titans are in 19th place after the first day of competition at Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass.
