* Reseda High is close to naming a boys’ basketball coach to replace David Enowitz. Top candidates are Taft junior varsity coach Derrick Taylor, who interviewed for the position Wednesday, former Canoga Park assistant Brad Katz, Crespi assistant Malcolm Norrington and Culver City assistant Stan Fairchild.

* Eric Serna of Monroe and James Word of Poly have been selected the co-players of the year from the Mid-Valley League.

HOCKEY

* Darren Patch of Agoura scored the winning goal with 8:13 left in the third period and the Ventura Mariners beat the Minnesota East Metro Lakers, 6-5, during division play at the Junior B National Championships in Blaine, Minn.

Chris Mallaber of Thousand Oaks scored the tying goal in the second period and Shawn Smith and David Perry each added goals.

SOCCER

* Josh Lopez, a senior midfielder from Camarillo High, was a second-team selection to the All-Southern Section Division I boys’ soccer squad.

Lopez was the only player from the region to be selected in Division I, although seven area athletes made the Division II teams. First-team picks in Division II included Jorge Ledesma of Hart and Ivan Medina of Rio Mesa. On the Division II second team are Rio Mesa’s David Cervantes and Simi Valley’s Sergio Renees. Hart’s Rafael Gonzalez, Rio Mesa’s Bryan Monka and Simi Valley’s Rudy Rafeh.

In Division III, Casey Schmidt of Newbury Park was named to the first team, his teammate, Cause Hanna, earned second-team honors and Itzik Rapaport of Calabasas was named to the third team.

Eleven players from the region made the Division IV teams, with La Canada’s Chris Cuellar, Santa Paula’s Adam Holiday and Ryan Shaw of St. Francis earning first-team honors.

Named to the second team were Leo Benitez of Harvard-Westlake, Mike Brewer of St. Francis, La Canada’s Eric Henderson, Crespi’s Jeff Okerman and Fillmore’s Adrian Zepeda. On the third team are Santa Paula’s Juan Elias and Rolando Lira, Harvard-Westlake’s Fred Post and Anthony Zoric of St. Francis.

Division V first-team members from the region are Tizoc Cruz-Gonzalez of Flintridge Prep and Josh Moreno of Village Christian.

Second-team picks include Flintridge Prep’s Josh Gould, Village Christian’s Tony Rotunno, Dustin Schramm of Lancaster Desert Christian and Jason Stangi of L.A. Baptist.

GOLF

* The 49th Los Angeles City Junior Golf Championships are scheduled for today through Monday at six Los Angeles city courses at Griffith Park and around the Sepulveda Basin.

There will be A, B, C and Championship flight competition for more than 400 boys and girls between 7 and 17.

Players making the 36-hole cut in each flight will play final rounds Monday at the Wilson course at Griffith Park.

Past L.A. City tournament champions include current professionals Corey Pavin, Duffy Waldorf, Tiger Woods and Amy Alcott. Last year’s winners were 14-year-old Nicolas Bollini of Yorba Linda Country Club and 15-year-old Yoon Cho of the California Country Club.

SOFTBALL

* The West Valley Softball Clinic is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at El Camino Real High.

The clinic will be instructed by El Camino Real softball team members, who will teach fundamental skills to girls 5 to 14.

Proper techniques for throwing, catching, hitting, field and baserunning will be covered.

Cost is $20 and includes lunch. Participants should bring a softball glove, cleats, a bat, sliding pads and a cap. Information: (818) 999-3790 or (818) 712-0334.

BASEBALL

* USC left-hander Barry Zito, who played at Pierce College last season, was selected national player of the week by Collegiate Baseball magazine after striking out 16 batters in consecutive games.

Zito, a 6-4 junior from El Cajon, tied a career high with 16 strikeouts March 12 against Oregon State.

Zito repeated the feat on Friday in Arizona. He pitched seven innings in each game.

The strikeout total is USC’s highest single-game performance since 1987.

Zito is 4-2 with 68 strikeouts in 45 2/3 innings.
