Golden West Men, Women Win State Swimming Titles

The Golden West men’s swimming team won its fifth consecutive state title and the Rustler women’s team won its first title at the state meet Saturday at Diablo Valley.

Christian Harcsas won the 200-yard backstroke in 1 minute 47.57 seconds and helped Golden West win the 400 freestyle relay in 3:04.27 for the Golden West men, who finished with 544 points. Diablo Valley (387 points) was second.

Alyson Edoff won the 100 freestyle in 52.87 and teamed with Kirsten Rich, Rita Mariani and Julia Wagner to set a state record in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:38.51 for the Rustler women, who finished with 392 points.

Riverside (316 points) was second and Orange Coast (293) third.

In the Southern California women’s tennis playoffs:

Saddleback team advances--Saddleback’s Erik Lundblad and Brock Berry defeated Glendale’s Jim Reading and Rick Roland, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, in the quarterfinals.

In the Southern California track and field preliminaries:

Gomez wins--Orange Coast’s Zoila Gomez finished the 10,000 meters in 38:04.30 to win the only final held Saturday. Teammate Bernenice Carbajal finished second in 38:42.01. In the preliminaries of the women’s shotput, Golden West’s Tofi Togagae won her flight with a throw of 41 feet 8 inches. In the men’s long jump, Calvin Baylor of Golden West won his flight with a leap of 22-4 1/4.
