Campanella Slams Door on Canyons

John Campanella’s grand slam highlighted a seven-run fifth inning and Glendale College defeated host Canyons, 17-2, on Tuesday to clinch at least a share of the Western State Conference Southern Division title.

Campanella had two hits and drove in five runs for Glendale (21-20, 13-9 in conference play), which leads Pierce by two games with two to play. Glendale plays host to Pierce on Thursday.

Matt Sagoian went the distance for Glendale, striking out nine and walking two. Matt Hellman hit a double and a home run for Glendale.

Canyons (17-26, 10-13) committed six errors, accounting for 11 unearned runs. Jeremy Mushinski had three hits and Sergio Franco had two hits, including his 13th home run.

In other baseball games:

Ventura 9, Moorpark 6--The Pirates hurt Moorpark’s chances for an at-large playoff berth in a WSC Northern Division game at Ventura.

Nick Gontmaher had three hits and three runs batted in for Ventura (23-16, 13-10). David Arroyo homered and singled.

CS Northridge 6, UC Riverside 5--Kevin Patrick’s two-out single in the 11th inning drove in Jason Gorman with the winning run at Northridge.

Jim DeBiase (9-5) entered the game with two out in the 11th and earned the victory.

Patrick had two hits and drove in three runs. Jason Watkins had two hits for Northridge (26-28).

SOFTBALL

Canyons 7, Valley 3--Valerie Reyes had two hits, including a two-run double, to help the Cougars clinch their first WSC Southern Division title since 1993.

Danni Socha, Nicole Giampaolo and Andrea Wintermute each drove in a run for Canyons (30-12-1, 16-4).
