Northridge Adds Basketball Player

Cal State Northridge signed its third men’s basketball player for next season, Lionel Benjamin of the Naval Academy Prep School in Newport, R.I.

Benjamin, a 6-foot-3 swing player, was a three-time All-Moore League selection at Lakewood High and averaged 19 points and eight rebounds his senior season in 1997-98. He averaged 17 points and six rebounds at Naval Academy Prep.

“Lionel is a young man we have recruited since he was at Lakewood High and monitored his progress,” Northridge Coach Bobby Braswell said. “He is a tremendous athlete with good defensive skills and is a great finisher on the fast break.”

Benjamin joins 6-3 guard Marco McCain of Cerritos College and 6-1 point guard Craig Calloway of Long Beach Jordan as new recruits. Braswell said he expects to sign one more player.

* Marlon Parmer of Verbum Dei, the Southern Section Division IV basketball player of the year, will join Ventura County player of the year Rafael Berumen at New Mexico in the fall.

FOOTBALL

* Sean Porter of Campbell Hall High, who rushed for 1,143 yards and scored 12 touchdowns in seven games last season, said he will attend Cal Lutheran.

* The sixth annual Paraclete coaches’ clinic is scheduled for Saturday at the school. Alemany Coach Jim Bonds and former Valley College Coach Gary Barlow are scheduled to speak. Information: (661) 943-3255.

DIVING

* Lauren Johanson, Tyler Rollins and David Plummer of Dive Thousand Oaks won events at the San Diego Invitational last weekend in La Jolla. Johanson won the Junior Olympic 16-18 girls’ three-meter competition with 165.95 points.

Rollins won the Novice 16-18 boys’ one-meter competition with 143.05 points.

Plummer won the Novice 10-11 boys’ three-meter event with 63.0 points and was second in the one-meter competition.
