Laguna Hills’ Furst Runs County’s Second-Best Time in 400

Laguna Hills senior Ashley Furst defeated a talented field to win the 400 meters at the Pacific Coast League girls’ track and field championships Thursday at Irvine High.

Furst finished the race in 57.46, a season-best mark for her and the second-best time in Orange County this season. Furst, who also won the 800 (2:22.90), edged Costa Mesa’s Julie Kroening (58.92) and Laguna Beach’s Kellie Cramm (59.21).

In the Empire League:

Khazabian wins three events--Katella’s Ellie Khazabian finished first in the 800 (2:24.92), 1,600 (5:24.57) and 3,200 (12:19.20) to lead Katella to the team title over Cypress, 152.5-114, at Santa Ana College. Courtney Stafford won the high jump (5-2) and triple jump (37-3 3/4) for the Knights.

In the Freeway League:

Scanlon wins three events--Megan Scanlon won three events at Fullerton College to lead Troy to its fourth title in the last five years. Scanlon finished first in the 100 hurdles (15.1), 300 hurdles (46.9) and triple jump (33-5 3/4) for the Warriors.

In the Garden Grove League:

Krause wins three events--Christine Krause finished first in the 800 (2:33), 1,600 (5:28) and 3,200 (12:06.2) for Pacifica.

In the Golden West League:

Sabio leads Rosary to title--Aileen Sabio led Rosary to the team title at Huntington Beach High with first-place finishes in the 100 (12.47) and 200 (26.26).

In the Empire League boys’ track and field finals:

Katella runs away with title--Katella won the team title by 105 points over second-place Cypress at Santa Ana College. Tony Lozano won the 800 (1:57.30), Danny Mejia won the 1,600 (4:23.16), Frances Johnson won the 100 (11.20) and long jump (22-1 1/2), and Bob Nita won the 200 (22.36), 400 (50.48) and was on both winning relay team for the Knights.

In the Freeway League:

Thomas wins two events--Buena Park senior Joe Thomas won the long jump with a mark of 22-7 1/2, which was a half-inch short of his county-leading mark. He also won the triple jump (44-2) and finished second in the high jump (6-2).

In the Garden Grove League:

Van Tress win two events--Jeremy Van Tress won the 1,600 (4:37.8) and 3,200 (10:17.2) for Rancho Alamitos.

In the Golden West League:

Leon wins three events--Santa Ana’s Alfonso Leon finished first in the 800 (1:58.06), 1,600 (4:22.26) and 3,200 (9:56.04) at Huntington Beach High.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Hancock wins twice--Costa Mesa’s Bruce Hancock finished first in the 800 (1:58.93) and 1,600 (4:26.20) for Costa Mesa at Irvine.
