Woods Falters; Roberts Shoots a 62

While Tiger Woods totally fell apart, Loren Roberts put together an eight-under-par 62 on Saturday for a two-stroke lead in the Byron Nelson Classic at Irving, Texas.

Roberts hit every fairway and saved par on the 18th after missing his only green to finish at 194, breaking by one stroke the 54-hole tournament record held by Woods and Ernie Els.

“The round of the year at this point,” said Roberts, who matched his career low with a bogey-free effort in wind so strong that he had to alter his putting stance.

Two strokes back was Steve Pate, who parred the final six holes for a 68.

Woods gladly would have settled for that. Tied for the lead at 14-under after making a 40-foot birdie on No. 10, he came unglued down the stretch--a bogey with a bad drive, a bogey with a poor approach, and another bogey when his chip with a three-wood came up 10 feet short.

That was nothing compared to the quadruple-bogey seven on the par-three 17th.

He hit a six-iron into the water, and his third shot ricocheted high off the rocks and short of the green. Then Woods, who on Friday said he prided himself on never giving up on a round, looked like he did just that.

He blew a chip over the green and the next one 20 feet by the hole. On his putt for triple bogey, Woods started walking toward the hole when it was halfway there, then one-handed it in for a seven.

“We’ve all made quads,” Pate said. “It’s no fun.”

Woods, eight shots off the lead, bolted off the TPC Four Seasons at Las Colinas without speaking.

Michelle McGann shot a seven-under-par 65 to take a one-shot lead over Annika Sorenstam after the second round of the $750,000 Sara Lee Classic at Nashville.

In a tournament in which breaking records has become almost routine at the 6,242-yard Hermitage Golf Course, McGann’s two-day score of 16-under-par was the lowest 36-hole total in LPGA history. Judy Dickinson’s previous record of minus-15 at the S&H; Golf Classic had stood since 1985.

Sorenstam, who set a record with a 61 on Friday, shot a 68 Saturday and was one stroke off the pace at minus 15.

McGann has not finished higher than 25th this year.

Fred Gibson birdied the 18th hole to take a one-stroke lead after three rounds of the Las Vegas Senior Classic. Gibson shot a six-under-par 66 and is nine-under for the tournament.

At eight under is Argentina’s Vicente Fernandez, and Isao Aoki, Frank Conner and Dave Eichelberger are at seven under at the Tournament Players Club at Summerlin.
