May, Hilleary Are Eliminated From Tournament

Most of the top-seeded teams advanced to the semifinals of the Oldsmobile Alero Beach Volleyball tournament Saturday at Huntington Beach, including second-seeded Karch Kiraly and Adam Johnson.

In the women’s tournament, qualifiers Misty May, from Long Beach State and Newport Harbor High, and Valinda Hilleary lost two matches and were eliminated.

Kiraly and Johnson will play fifth-seeded Sinjin Smith and Rob Heidger in one men’s semifinal at noon today. Qualifiers Brent Doble and Lee LeGrande also advanced to the semifinals to play fourth-seeded Carl Henkel and Kevin Wong at 10 a.m.

Four of the top-five seeded women’s teams advanced to today’s semifinals, including top-seeded Lisa Arce and Barbra Fontana, who will play third-seeded Holly McPeak and Nancy Reno at 9 a.m. Second-seeded Liz Masakayan and Elaine Youngs, formerly of El Toro High, will play Annett Buckner-Davis and Jenny Johnson-Jordan in the 11 a.m. semifinal.

The women’s final is at 3 p.m. with the men’s final to follow. The men’s and women’s championship teams will earn $20,000.
