Kenyan Philip Tarus defended his title in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon with a time of 2 hours 8 minutes 33 seconds at San Diego. It was the fastest marathon ever run in California, and the 11th-fastest in the world this year. Kyrgystan’s Irina Bogacheva, the 1998 runner-up, won her third marathon since December, finishing at 2:28:46. . . . Kenyan Eluid Keiring won the Prague International Marathon in the Czech Republic, his marathon debut, in 2:11:19. Italy’s Franca Fiacconi was the women’s winner, setting a race record of 2:28:34. . . . Paul Yego led a 1-2-3-4 Kenyan finish in the Sao Paulo Marathon in Brazil, running in 2:15:22, defeating Geoffrey Letting by 10 seconds. Brazil’s Marcia Narlock was the women’s winner at 2:37:21.

Australia’s Ryan Carter won an international triathlon at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, an event billed as a qualifying race for the 2000 Olympics. Carter, seeking enough points to compete in the Olympics, was timed in 1:51:55, eclipsing Hideo Fukui’s meet record of 1:52:40 set last year.

The UCLA softball team got two runs batted in by regional most-outstanding-player Julie Adams as the Bruins defeated Missouri, 12-5, to advance to the College World Series beginning Thursday at Oklahoma City. Stacey Nuveman hit her nation-leading 31st home run for the Bruins (59-6), who got another complete game from Courtney Dale, her third in three regional games. UCLA will open the World Series against DePaul on Thursday . . . Syracuse made the NCAA lacrosse Final Four for the 17th consecutive year, stunning top-seeded and previously undefeated Loyola of Maryland, 17-12, at Princeton, N.J. In another quarterfinal, third-seeded Virginia defeated Delaware, 17-10.

The UCLA men’s tennis team advanced to the NCAA championship semifinals with a 4-1 victory over No. 8 Florida at Athens, Ga. The top-ranked Bruins (25-2) will play in their 17th semifinal in 23 years against No. 5 Louisiana State today at 11. . . . Stanford won its fourth NCAA women’s tennis national title this decade and 10th overall, defeating defending champion and host Florida, 5-2.

Cal Lutheran defeated Chapman, 5-2, in the finals of the NCAA Division III West Regional baseball tournament Saturday at Georgetown, Texas, to advance to the Division III College World Series at Salem, Va. beginning Friday.

Brad Van Liew, 31, of Los Angeles became the only American to finish the fifth single-handed Around Alone race (formerly the BOC challenge) when he sailed his 50-foot boat into Charleston, S.C., where he started last September. A broken mast one day into the fourth and final leg from Uruguay dashed Van Liew’s hopes of winning the leg and finishing second overall in Class II. He finished third overall behind France’s Jean Pierre Mouligne and Britain’s Mike Garside.

NASCAR Busch Grand National points leader Matt Kenseth outlasted a five-hour rain delay to win the First Union 200 at Nazareth Speedway in Pennsylvania. The race was shortened because of darkness from 200 to 168 laps. . . . Spain’s Alex Criville mastered the 2.37-mile Paul Ricard circuit--while France’s Max Biaggi and American Kenny Roberts tumbled painfully to the tarmac--to win the 500cc world title in the French Grand Prix motorcycle competition at Le Castellet, France. . . .

The English Rugby Football Union is investigating reports that England captain Lawrence Dallaglio was a former drug dealer and recreational drug user. The report published Sunday in the News of the World said Dallaglio, scheduled to lead England in this fall’s World Cup in England and Wales, was an ex-drug dealer who used cocaine and ecstasy to celebrate a victory in 1997. The newspaper said Dallaglio admitted taking ecstasy and cocaine at a party after the British Lions’ 2-1 win over South Africa. . . . Laurent Jalabert replaced defending champion Marco Pantani as the overall leader of the Tour of Italy by winning a 20-mile individual time trial at Ancona in 40:36.

AC Milan defeated Perugia, 2-1, on the final day of the season to defeat Lazio by one point and claim its fifth Serie A soccer title of the 1990s. . . . In beach volleyball, Adam Johnson and Karch Kiraly defeated Dain Blanton and Eric Fonoimoana, 12-10, to win the AVP New Orleans Open.
