Northridge Discusses Soccer Incident

Cal State Northridge officials on Monday discussed a skirmish among players at the conclusion of a women’s soccer game between Northridge and Idaho State on Sunday at North Campus Stadium, but made no announcements about possible disciplinary action.

Northridge recorded an emotional 1-0 overtime victory in a Big Sky Conference finale on a goal by Gentry Green. The victory qualified the Matadors for the Big Sky tournament. They open play Thursday against regular-season champion Montana.

Baseball--Marco Contreras, a former Cal State Northridge player, has taken over as acting coach at Reseda High.

A clash ensued after Northridge players apparently tore at a toy Bengal tiger--the Idaho State mascot--that was displayed near the bleachers. Players were separated and the incident did not escalate, officials said.

Northridge Coach Allison Lee and Athletic Director Dick Dull could not be reached for comment.

BASKETBALL

* Sinnamonn Garrett of Crescenta Valley High, a Times’ All-Valley guard, committed to New Mexico State on Monday. As a junior, Garrett averaged 18.3 points and was selected Pacific League girls’ player of the year.

* Cal State Northridge’s women’s team has been picked by coaches and media to repeat as Big Sky Conference champion, according to the conference preseason poll.

Northridge won the conference title for the first time last year, when the Matadors went 21-8, including a 13-3 conference record.

Northridge received seven of nine first-place votes of conference coaches and was a unanimous choice of the media.

SOFTBALL

* Julie Watson, an All-Valley infielder from Saugus High, committed on Sunday to Cal State Fullerton.

* Amanda Fortune, a pitcher for Hart, committed to Illinois, a first-year program in the Big Ten Conference.

* Outfielder Justina Kahaku of Canyon committed to Hawaii.

* Infielder Jacqui Goodchild of El Camino Real committed to Boston College, where she will be reunited with former teammate Cara Blumfield.

BASEBALL

* Chris Dickerson, a senior outfielder at Notre Dame, committed to Nevada on Monday.

* Mike Stone, the coach at Reseda since 1978, has resigned to become the school’s new golf coach.

“Its going to be a lot of fun,” he said.

Stone had the longest continuous tenure of any current City Section baseball coach in the region.

* Marco Contreras, 27, a former Cal State Northridge player who served as an assistant at Harvard-Westlake, has taken over as baseball coach.

* Garett Michaels, a former Westlake infielder, has made Arizona’s team as a walk-on.
