Servite Wins Twice to Take North County Title

Servite, ranked fifth in the county, defeated La Verne Bonita and Los Angeles Loyola to win the North Orange County boys’ water polo tournament Saturday at Servite.

The tournament standings, which were based on goal differential, ended with Saddleback second and Loyola in third.

In Servite’s final game, against Bonita, Dane Jensen scored seven goals and Vincent Belvins had three, and the Friars won, 14-8.

Josh Shadwick and Michael Kim each scored three goals for Servite in its 9-5 victory over Loyola.

Mike Rustemeyer, who played the two-meter position most of the tournament, had seven steals in the two games.

In other tournament games:

No. 9 Laguna Beach 15, University 10--Tied 4-4 at halftime, Laguna Beach scored 11 goals in the second half. Brandon Burdick had four goals for Laguna Beach.

Loyola 8, Saddleback 5--Julian Gonzalez scored three goals for the Roadrunners (23-3), who suffered their first loss in five tournament games.

Marina 10, Manhattan Beach Mira Costa 3--Adam Miller, a senior playing his last game for host Marina (14-14), scored four goals. Teammates Dave Wagner and Greg Lammers each scored two goals. Mira Costa is 15-11.

Canyon 10, Palos Verdes Peninsula 8--Canyon (14-12) outscored Peninsula (18-7) in the second half, 7-3. Chris Meyer scored five goals and David Basadre had three.

Katella 9, Canyon 7--Brian Zuniga and Dan Flude each scored three goals for Katella (14-11). Jon Pease had three for Canyon (13-12).
