38-Point Outburst Puts Grace Brethren in Final
Grace Brethren came from 13 points down to defeat Rio Hondo Prep, 38-13, Saturday at Grace Brethren and advance to the school’s first Eight-Man Large Division championship game.
Tyson Larson rushed for 99 yards and three touchdowns in 24 carries for the Lancers (11-0).
Top-seeded Grace Brethren plays Heritage League rival Faith Baptist next Saturday. A coin flip will determine the site.
Rio Hondo Prep (7-3) had won three consecutive Eight-Man titles, including back-to-back Small Division championships, before stepping up last year and winning the Large Division.
Larson scored on runs of one, one, and 29 yards.
Ryan Shaffer caught four passes for 107 yards, including a 62-yard touchdown from quarterback Robert Serra that pulled Grace Brethren to within 13-7 in the second quarter.
“We knew they must be good because they won three years in a row,” Shaffer said. “The disadvantage is that we hadn’t played them before. But our advantage was that we are in better condition. That’s why we shut them out in the second half.”
Serra completed nine of 23 passes for 164 yards.
