Outlook Is Bullish for Diamond Bar

If there were any doubts two weeks ago, there aren’t many now. The Diamond Bar High football team looks ready to defend its Southern Section championship.

A week after avenging its only loss of 1998, the Brahmas manhandled Carson, 42-6, Friday night at Diamond Bar High.

The 36-point victory comes on the heels of Diamond Bar’s 30-0 whitewashing of Monrovia, the only team to defeat Diamond Bar (4-0) on its way to the Division II title last year.

On Friday, the Brahmas jumped on the Colts (2-2) early, getting two touchdowns from running back Jason Wright to take a 14-0 lead in less than eight minutes.

“That was huge. This win was important for the team,” said Wright, who finished with 85 yards in 13 carries with touchdown runs of six and 27 yards. He also took a screen pass 48 yards for a touchdown that re-energized the Brahmas in the third quarter.

Despite the 28-6 halftime score, Carson had given a good accounting of itself. The Brahmas had 141 yards to the Colts’ 94. But Carson had a holding call that cost it 49 yards, a dropped pass that could have meant 30 to 40 more, and turned the ball over inside its own 15 twice, which led to 14 Diamond Bar points.

“They were better than it looks on the scoreboard,” Wright said. “They were tough, they hit real hard and they were quick.”

Added Brahma Coach Terry Roche: “We beat a quality football team. We were dinged up and I was a little worried about their size, but the kids stepped it up.”

Senior quarterback Donnie Sizemore accounted for three scores, two passing and a five-yard run. Along with his screen pass to Wright, Sizemore threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to junior Dominic Robinson to make it 28-0 with 29 seconds left in the first half. Sizemore actually set up the score by intercepting a Justin Cooper pass and returning it 15 yards to the Carson 15.
