Troy Dominates Second Half to Defeat Canyon

Troy High’s offense exploded for 20 third-quarter points as the Warriors’ broke open a close game and defeated Canyon, 27-7, in a nonleague game Friday at Fullerton High.

Troy running back Brett Murray led the Warriors’ attack as the senior fullback rushed for 171 yards in 29 carries.

Murray scored on runs of two, one, and 16 yards for Troy (3-1). Canyon is 0-4.

“We were shocked at halftime,” said Murray, referring to score. “At first, .I think we looked at their 0-3 record and figured we could run them down, but our coach [John Turek] gave us a motivational speech at halftime and straightened us out”

On the Warriors’ first possession of the second-half, quarterback Jordan Oliver completed a short pass to tight end Mark Ahlberg. The six-foot-six Ahlberg barreled down field 60 yards for a touchdown to give Troy a 14-7 lead.

Ahlberg finished the game with five catches for 100 yards.

Linebacker Jason Schulz set up Troy’s third touchdown when he blocked a Comanche punt and the Warriors recovered at the Canyon five-yard line. Two plays later, Murray scored on a one-yard run and the Warriors’ led, 21-7.

With two minutes left in the third-quarter, Murray capped a 67-yard drive with a 16-yard touchdown run.
