Washington, Brea Run Rings Around Katella

Share

Kenny Washington rushed for 161 yards and two touchdowns to lead Brea Olinda to a 44-6 victory over Katella in a nonleague game Friday night at Glover Stadium.

Washington’s first score was set up by Ron Benigno’s 81-yard interception return to the Katella four-yard line. Washington scored on the next play, caught a 19-yard touchdown pass on the Wildcats’ next series, and added a 65-yard scoring run midway through the third quarter.

“Our offense lulls people to sleep with the run,” said Brea Coach Jon Looney. “Then, we have people who can get downfield and get behind people. Our (offensive) line did a good job. We’ve handled the line of scrimmage for four games in a row.”

Katella (1-3) committed five turnovers, with Brea (4-0) intercepting four of Knight quarterback Chris Haller’s passes.

Katella tied the game 6-6 midway through the first quarter when Brian Jeffery went 68 yards for a touchdown. But Brea answered with quick touchdown on its next three possessions, the longest drive taking six plays.

Ryan Fortner, who rushed for 28 yards in five carries, scored from six yards out with just over three minutes left in the first quarter following a Katella fumble. After an interception on the Knights’ next possession, Steve Stagnaro found Benigno for a 48-yard touchdown pass. A two-point conversion gave the Wildcats a 29-6 first-quarter lead, and they never looked back.
