Wilson’s Deuce Lifts Valley, 8-7

Josh Wilson’s two-point goal midway through the third quarter gave Valley College an 8-7 victory over Mt. San Antonio on Saturday in the championship match of the Cypress water polo tournament.

The Monarchs (8-7-1) were trailing, 7-6, when Wilson scored.

Andrew Langer had four of his 12 saves for Valley in the fourth quarter.

Earlier, Scott Ryan had five goals for the Monarchs in a 17-7 pool-play victory over Cerritos.

Eddie Barrera had two goals for Valley in a 6-3 pool-play setback to Cypress to start the day after six Monarch starters got lost on the way to Cypress College and did not play.

Valley advanced to the championship game on goal differential.

Ventura 7, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 6--Eduardo Paes de Barros scored three goals for the Pirates (8-5) in a first-round victory at the Foothill tournament.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Cal Lutheran 3, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 2--Betsy Fisch and Alia Khan scored two minutes apart in the second half, lifting the Regals to a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory at Cal Lutheran.

Fisch scored her fifth goal on a 35-yard free kick in the 67th minute and Khan made her second in the 69th minute on a crossing pass from Cathy Turpin.

Alix Rucinski scored her 13th goal for Cal Lutheran (7-3, 5-0) with an assist from Ashley Scott in the eighth minute to tie the score, 1-1.

Janine Dictor of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (2-8, 1-3) scored from 13 yards in the seventh minute and Erin Falconer gave the Athenas a 2-1 halftime lead with a goal in the 19th minute.

MEN’S SOCCER

Claremont-Mudd 3, Cal Lutheran 0--Trevor Mutch and Sean Reeves scored 1:18 apart for the Stags early in the second half of a SCIAC match at Cal Lutheran.

Samir Singh broke a scoreless tie for Claremont-Mudd (6-1-1, 2-0-1) in the 38th minute on a goal assisted by Alex Castillo.

Pete McGovern assisted on the Stags’ last two goals.

Cal Lutheran (6-2, 3-1) had 10 shots on goal, but was unable to break through against goalkeeper Jamie Harding, who made four saves.

Moorpark 6, Fresno 0--Chris Swatosh had two goals and the Raiders scored five in a 22-minute span of the second half at Moorpark.

J.D. Rotteau also had two goals for Moorpark (3-5-1).

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Stanford Invitational--Senior Josh Spiker of Ventura placed second in the Division I race and junior Mark Nevers of Oak Park won the Division IV title in the meet at Stanford Golf Course.

Spiker clocked 15:22 over the 5,000-meter course, but finished 17 seconds behind senior Ian Dobson of Klamath Union (Ore.).

Nevers remained undefeated with a 15:50 clocking that helped Oak Park finish second behind Shasta Central Valley.
