Sea Kings, Knights Win Titles at Stanford

The Corona del Mar and Foothill girls’ cross-country teams won titles at the Stanford Invitational on Saturday.

Corona del Mar, the top-ranked team in the Southern Section and state Division IV polls, had four runners finish in less than 20 minutes on the three-mile course, including senior Liz Morse, who won in 18 minutes 58 seconds.

Morse trailed San Francisco University’s Aliza Cohen by 20 yards with 100 yards to go, but sped by and finished one second ahead of Cohen. Corona del Mar finished with 27 points, 118 ahead of second-place University.

Corona del Mar, also the county’s top-ranked team, got top-10 finishes by junior Katie Quinlan, who was fifth overall (19:38); junior Jenny Cummins in sixth (19:50) and sophomore Season Meservey in eighth (19:58).

Foothill, third-ranked in the state Division II poll, toppled top-ranked Santa Margarita, 92-119.

Foothill sophomore Laura Strachan took seventh overall (19:14), freshman Katie Strachan was 12th (19:32), Missy Ellsworth was 24th (20:04), Brittany Swanek was 28th (20:07) and Jessie Sousa was 34th (20:21).

Robin Stevens of Vacaville won the Division II race in 18:26, Santa Margarita’s Lori Mann was fifth (18:51) and Newport Harbor’s Amber Steen was sixth in 19:09.

In the Division I race, Mater Dei sophomore Jenny Sears finished fifth in 19:13, which helped the Monarchs to an eighth-place finish.

In the boys’ competition:

Mission Viejo takes third--The Diablos took third in the Division II race, led by Dan Fogel’s 18th-place finish in 16:51.

Newport Harbor finished fourth thanks to Doug Dukes’ 19th-place finish in 16:54, Trabuco Hills was ninth and Foothill finished 11th. Sam Marquez of Trabuco Hills finished sixth in 16:26, the best finish among county runners in the race.
