Newbury Park Boys Win a Double-Cross
Warren Livingston finished second and Brandon Nakagawa was third to help Newbury Park High defeat Simi Valley and Agoura in a Marmonte League double-dual boys’ cross-country meet Thursday at Agoura.
Livingston, a junior, clocked 16:41 over the three-mile course and Nakagawa, also a junior, timed 16:43 as Newbury Park (3-0, 3-0 in league meets) beat Agoura, 26-29, and Simi Valley, 21-38.
Agoura, ranked No. 3 in the region, beat two-time defending league champion Thousand Oaks and Westlake last week, but the Chargers couldn’t keep pace with unranked Newbury Park.
Seniors Jeremy Law (16:49), Mike Berns (16:57) and Tim Perram (17:02) placed fourth, fifth and sixth for Agoura (5-1, 3-1), but junior Kevin Sullivan had an off race and finished 12th in 17:40.
“We know we have a good team,” Coach Mike Stewart of Newbury Park said. “We feel like we’re kind of a Rodney Dangerfield team. We feel like we’re good, but we don’t get that much respect.”
Senior Richard Chetwynd placed first in 16:33 for Simi Valley.
GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY
Agoura 24, Newbury Park 31; Agoura 20, Simi Valley 39; Newbury Park 23, Simi Valley 34--The Chargers took four of the top 10 spots and recorded two victories in a Marmonte League double-dual meet at Agoura.
Junior Laura Jakosky of Agoura, defending Southern Section Division II champion, finished nearly a minute ahead of her nearest competitor in 18:56 over the three-mile course.
Laurel Casey (20:32) finished third, Laura Christopher (21:14) was sixth and Lauren Robertson (21:15) came in seventh for the Chargers (5-1, 3-1).
GIRLS’ TENNIS
Santa Barbara 9, Calabasas 9--The Dons (5-2) won on games, 80-75, in a nonleague match at Santa Barbara.
Kathy Habuki and Andrea Leewong (21-0) of Calabasas swept three opponents at No. 1 doubles.
Freshman Erin Everly (20-1) swept at No. 1 singles for Calabasas (6-1).
Valencia 10, Hart 8--Freshman Ashley Herrera surrendered one game in three sets at No. 2 singles and No. 1 Julia Peek lost two games in a sweep for the Vikings (8-4, 3-1) in a Foothill League victory at Valencia.
The No. 3 team of juniors Jennie Choi and Tracy Hsu swept for Hart (2-7, 0-4), which was unbeaten in league matches the last two seasons.
The Indians’ No. 2 doubles team of Jamie Ladd and Heidi Gragg swept and improved to 24-2.
San Fernando 4, Van Nuys 3--Nancy Huerta and Annette Mendoza of San Fernando defeated Yury Park and Marina Rozhansky, 8-2, in the decisive match at No. 3 singles in a Valley Mission League match at Van Nuys.
The Tigers (6-0, 3-0) beat Van Nuys (3-3, 2-1) for the first time in the program’s 20-year history.
Dalia Alcazar of San Fernando won the last five games to beat Joanne Joo, 8-7 (7-4), at No. 3 singles.
Westlake 13, Simi Valley 5--Lauren Baer and Lindsay Weiss remained undefeated at No. 1 doubles in a Marmonte League victory for the Warriors (7-3, 5-0) at North Ranch Country Club.
Burroughs 12, Canyon 6--Dragana Ognenovska and Shania Zaidi swept their singles sets for the Indians (8-0, 4-0) at Burroughs.
GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
Saugus def. Burbank, 15-3, 15-5, 15-5--Gina Boersma and Jessica Burns each had nine kills in a Foothill League victory for the Centurions (4-2, 2-0) at Saugus.
Chatsworth def. Granada Hills, 15-5, 17-15, 15-3--Leila Pate had 10 kills and Linda Wang had seven with six blocks in a West Valley League victory for the Chancellors (3-3, 1-2) at Chatsworth.
Providence def. Holy Martyrs 15-8, 16-14, 15-9--Lauren Holt had 13 kills and six aces for the Pioneers in a Liberty League victory at Providence.
It was the 30th consecutive league victory for Providence (7-1, 5-0).
Notre Dame def. Alemany, 17-15, 15-12, 15-5--Sarah Braga had 13 kills with 12 digs and the Knights (6-2, 2-0) won a Mission League match at Notre Dame.
GIRLS’ GOLF
Notre Dame 138, Alemany 193--Erin Roundtree recorded six pars in nine holes to shoot three-over par 40 and help the Knights (6-2, 5-2) win at Woodley Lakes Golf Course.
COLLEGE WRESTLING
Moorpark 28, Fresno 12--The Raiders fell behind, 6-0, but won seven consecutive divisions to defeat the top-ranked team in the state at Fresno.
Stuart Young at 165 pounds and Arsen Aleksanyan at 174 pounds won by pins for the Raiders.
