Smith to Coach at Los Alamitos

Richard Smith was named boys’ basketball coach at Los Alamitos High for the 1999-2000 season, vice principal Jerry Halprin said.
Smith replaces Steve Brooks, who resigned last week in the wake of a school investigation of alleged misappropriation of funds.
“We will open the job again in the spring and [Smith] will be able to apply again for the position,” Halprin said.
Smith, who teaches match and computer science at Los Alamitos, was coach at Servite from 1989-92, leading the Friars to the 1990 state Division III title. In 1991, the Friars won the Southern Section Division III-A title.
Smith had a 63-30 record at Servite and was 21-30 in two seasons (1993-’95) at Newport Harbor.
