Ventura Finds Bright Spot at Glendale, 31-6

After teammate Travis Rogers suffered a mild concussion in practice on Tuesday, reserve running back Pheon Bright knew he would get a chance to play Saturday afternoon against Glendale.

Bright, a seldom-used freshman from Vanceboro, N.C., didn’t waste his opportunity.

He finished with 178 yards and two touchdowns in 23 carries in Ventura’s 31-6 victory in a Western State Conference Northern Division game at Glendale High.

“Pheon has been working very hard for us in practice and he finally got his chance and did a great job,” said Terry Morris, Ventura coach.

Bright combined with Rogers to make life miserable for Glendale.

Despite the concussion, Rogers managed 129 yards and a touchdown in 24 carries. He has 716 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns.

While the 1-2 rushing tandem helped Ventura (4-1, 2-1) roll up 344 yards on the ground, the Pirate defense repeatedly frustrated Glendale quarterback Mike Frost.

In his poorest performance of the season, Frost completed 11 of 36 passes for 153 yards and a touchdown with four interceptions.

D.J. Coote had three of the interceptions, giving him six.

Frost did manage to become the career passing leader for Glendale (2-3, 1-2) with 3,392 yards, including a conference-leading 1,605 this season.

Ventura outgained Glendale, 466 yards to 238.
