Newport Harbor Wins on Late Penalty Stroke

Katie Welbourn scored on a penalty stroke with 12 minutes remaining to help Newport Harbor defeat Huntington Beach, 1-0, in a Sunset League field hockey game Tuesday at Newport Harbor.

Goalie Susan Lear had seven saves for the Sailors, who improved to 6-1-2. Huntington Beach is 5-2-3.

Huntington Beach’s Kelli Kedis suffered a neck injury in the game after collidingwith Welbourn, Newport Harbor Coach Sharon Wolfe said.

Kedis was taken to Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, where she was treated and released.

In Garden Grove League girls’ tennis:

Bolsa Grande 10, Santiago 8--Anhthu Ha and Cheryl Lacson swept in doubles, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2, for visiting Bolsa Grande (8-5, 3-4).

In Olympic League tennis:

St. Margaret’s 12, Calvary Chapel 6--Allison Austin and Katie Conklin swept in doubles, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, to improve to 33-0 for host St. Margaret’s (9-3, 8-1).

In the Serra League:

No. 3 Mater Dei 11, No. 10 Santa Margarita 7--Melissa Esmero swept in singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, for visiting Mater Dei (7-1, 3-0). Erin Miller won two of three singles sets, 6-3, 6-0, and lost to Esmero, 0-6, for Santa Margarita (7-5, 2-1).

In Pacific Coast League girls’ golf:

No. 1 University 113, Estancia 161--Angela Won was the medalist and shot a one-under 35 for University (9-0, 3-0) at Strawberry Farms. Won eagled the sixth hole for the second time this season.

In the Sunset League:

No. 4 Marina 122, No. 8 Los Alamitos 126--Medalist Courtney Goebel shot three-over 39 and made six pars for host Marina (9-2, 4-1). Michelle Eastlack shot 40 for Los Alamitos (8-2, 3-2).

In Pacific Coast League girls’ volleyball:

Laguna Beach 3, University 1--Kellie Cramm had 20 kills and Maggie Mallarian totaled 18 for visiting Laguna Beach (3-5, 2-1), which won, 15-7, 17-15, 14-16, 15-7. Melissa Zapian had 14 kills and four blocks for University (8-2, 1-1).

In the South Coast League:

Dana Hills 3, No. 9 San Clemente 2--April Nick had 29 kills and Brooke Bond added 16 for Dana Hills (4-5, 2-1), which won, 15-4, 7-15, 12-15, 15-13, 15-12. Kimberly Noble had 28 kills and Katy Daly added 16 for San Clemente (4-5, 2-1).

El Toro 3, No. 10 Capistrano Valley 1--Kim Wilson had 10 kills to help host El Toro (4-3, 2-1) win, 13-15, 15-12, 15-6, 15-10. Becky Warnick had 21 kills for the Cougars (8-3, 1-2).

In nonleague boys’ water polo:

Long Beach Wilson 13, Foothill 9--Tony Azevedo scored four goals to help Wilson win at Belmont Plaza. Foothill led, 6-3, in the first quarter before the Bruins rallied. Foothill goalie Adam Katz had nine saves.

In the Golden West League:

Saddleback 12, Tustin 7--Julian Gonzalez scored five goals and Daniel Noon scored three for Saddleback (11-2, 2-0). Goalie Art Colchado had six saves for the Roadrunners.
