Oilers Must Go Overtime to Knock Off Barons, 12-10

Sean Elo and Brandon Berberett scored four goals apiece, with each contributing a goal in overtime as Huntington Beach defeated Fountain Valley, 12-10, in Sunset League boys’ water polo Wednesday.

Scott Jones of Fountain Valley scored with 20 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime. But Huntington Beach (6-10, 1-1) outscored the Barons, 3-1, in the extra period.

Fountain Valley is 6-8, 0-2.

In other Sunset League games:

No. 8 Los Alamitos 11, Esperanza 4--John Enete had six steals and Jeremiah Lidyoff had five steals for Los Alamitos (13-6, 2-0).

Edison 6, Marina 5--Shaun Carman scored two goals for visiting Edison (9-7, 2-0), including the game-winner with less than two minutes to play.

Marina is 4-9 overall and 0-2 in league play.

In the Century League:

No. 2 Foothill 13, Canyon 4--Pat Logan scored four goals to lead visiting Foothill (12-4, 1-0). Chris Meyer scored three goals for Canyon (6-7, 0-2).

No. 6 Villa Park 13, El Modena 0--Utility player Mike Casagrande had five goals and Shane Joffe had three for Villa Park.

Santa Ana Valley 22, Orange 4--Fernando Garcia scored five goals and Carlos Rubio and Abner Castorena had four each for host Santa Ana Valley (15-2, 2-0).

In the Freeway League:

Buena Park 15, Sonora 4--Kyle Harriman scored five goals and Robby Hegel added four to lead host Buena Park (11-5, 2-0).

Fullerton 16, Sunny Hills 6--Erik Kroh scored four goals and Lee Votaw and Matt Leal each had three for host Fullerton (5-8, 1-1).

La Habra 12, Troy 11--Gary Singer scored with 1:51 remaining to break an 11-11 tie for host La Habra (9-9, 2-0), which trailed, 10-7, after three quarters.

Josh Jewett scored three of his four goals in the fourth quarter, including the tying goal with 2:13 remaining.

Ian Markstrum scored eight goals for Troy and set a school career record for goals with 230.

In the Sea View League:

No. 1 Newport Harbor 18, Laguna Hills 10--Peter Belden scored five goals for visiting Newport Harbor (14-1, 2-0), which pulled away with six fourth-quarter goals. Tim Birdsong had 12 saves for the Sailors. Ryan McMillan scored five goals for Laguna Hills (11-3, 0-1).

No. 10 Irvine 8, Aliso Niguel 7--Irvine came out strong, taking a 4-1 lead at the end of the first half, then had to weather Aliso Niguel’s late rally.

Aliso Niguel’s Dan Martin scored three of his four goals in the fourth quarter, with two of them coming in the last two minutes of the game.

Billy Swanson scored the eventual winning goal with three minutes left. Teammates Peter Schafer scored three goals and Chris Peck had two.

The Vaqueros (11-6, 1-1) remain in second place behind Newport Harbor in the league.
