Re “Video Distribution to Benefit Children,” Sept. 24.

I applaud Michael Hart and the entire Chaminade Middle School for their wonderful project of collecting donated Disney and other G-rated videos and then distributing them to children at area hospitals. I am thrilled that Hart, the dean of students at the school, is setting such an excellent example of community service. I am certain that his late sister, Eileen Hart, would feel tremendously honored at being the inspiration for his actions.

I would also like to commend the entire Chaminade community service program. We as a nation need to change our “I” and “me” attitudes to a “we’re-all-in-this-together” mentality, and I believe this program is a tremendous step in that direction. I am sure there are many who recoil at the implications of forced participation, but valuable life lessons are being taught. Let children and adults alike be required to give a few of their personal hours each week or month to serve the community, and perhaps the “required” aspect of the service will disappear.

The hearts, minds and attitudes of the givers of the community service will be changed for the better, and the recipients of the community service will likewise have their faith in the human race restored.
