Amritraj Claims Two Tennis Titles

Top-seeded Stephen Amritraj of Calabasas and Ryan Haymond of Bakersfield defeated No. 2-seeded brothers Doug and Scott Stewart of Malibu, 6-1, 6-3, to win the boys’ 18 division of the Southern California junior sectional doubles tennis tournament Sunday at Los Caballeros Sports Village in Fountain Valley.

Amritraj also won the boys’ 16 mixed doubles title with Ashley Maddocks of Laguna Beach. The No. 2-seeded team beat No. 3-seeded Rylan Rizza of Rancho Palos Verdes and Diane Matias of Gardena, 6-1, 4-6, 6-0.

No. 4-seeded Vahe Assadourian of Glendale and Mark Contreras of Temple City defeated No. 3-seeded Eric McKean of Pacific Palisades and Justin Montgomery of Channel Islands Harbor, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5, in the boys’ 14 division.

No. 9-seeded Erica Sauer of Somis and Reza Zalameda of Los Angeles beat No. 7-seeded Brooke Borisoff of Agoura and Casey Cross of Rancho Mirage, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, in girls’ 16 competition.

Sauer also teamed with Travis Rettenmaier of Camarillo to beat Haymond and Ashley Backus of San Diego, 7-6 (7-0), 6-3, in the mixed doubles 18 division final.

AUTO RACING

* Sean Woodside of Saugus held off Bill Sedgwick of Acton to win the Re-Refined Oil 250-lap NASCAR Winston West race by .24 seconds Sunday at Mesa Marin Speedway in Bakersfield to maintain his hold on first place in the points standings with one race remaining.

Sedgwick led for 183 laps, then swapped the lead with Woodside, who took over for the final 18 laps to win the Mesa Marin event for the third consecutive year. Two-time NASCAR Craftsman truck champion Ron Hornaday Jr. finished fourth.

Woodside, who joined the series in 1997 and finished second in the points twice, leads 1998 rookie of the year Austin Cameron of El Cajon, 1,920 points to 1,811, entering the Nov. 20 season finale at Twin Ring Motegi in Japan.

Sedgwick’s performance moved him to fourth in points.

Woodside finished third in the 60-lap late model Race of Champions, which was won by 1999 Ultra Wheels Spec Truck champion Dan Holtz of Pacific Palisades. Irwindale Speedway regular Brian Barron was second.

Woodside finished 20th in a 100-lap late model race Thursday at Mesa Marin.

* Cory Kruseman of Ventura won the 30-lap Sprint Car Racing Assn. main event at Ventura Raceway Saturday to move into second place in the points standings with five races remaining.

Kruseman, who trails Richard Griffin of Silver City, N.M., by 123 points, started third and took the lead on the second lap. He pulled away from the field after a restart on the 25th lap.
