Newport Harbor Wins in Water Polo
It looked as if Foothill would give top-ranked Newport Harbor a game in nonleague boys’ water polo play Friday--at least for a quarter.
Pat Logan scored the only goal in the first quarter to give second-ranked Foothill a lead, but the Sailors came roaring back for a 7-4 victory at Newport Harbor.
The Sailors’ press defense held Foothill to only one goal in the second and third quarters.
“They ran a very good defense and they had good execution,” Foothill Coach Jim Brumm said. “Newport is a very fundamental team and they make very few mistakes.”
Newport Harbor’s offense capitalized on Foothill’s lapses, getting goals on two breakaways and two man-advantage situations.
Peter Belden finished with two goals, four steals and one assist.
“We played a very solid game,” Newport Harbor Coach Brian Kreutzkamp said. “We’ve been focusing on the press for four days now, and we had some great play by Belden and [Tim] Birdsong.”
Birdsong finished with 10 saves.
Robert Weiner scored four goals for Newport Harbor (17-1) and Ryan Cook and Robert Weiner one each.
Foothill scored twice in the middle of the fourth quarter, but Newport Harbor quickly regained its composure.
Logan scored twice for Foothill (14-4).
