Pacifica Goes Airborne for Change in Rout of La Quinta

Share

With running back and leading scorer Jared Kemp sidelined, Pacifica went to the air and Joey Fuske passed his way into the school record book in a 56-0 Garden Grove League victory over La Quinta Friday at Bolsa Grande High.

Kemp didn’t play as a precautionary measure after straining his Achilles’ tendon, but he is expected to return next week when the Mariners (5-2, 3-0) take on Los Amigos. A dozen Mariners carried the ball in Kemp’s absence, but it was the passing game that carried Pacifica to victory.

Fuske, who threw for only three touchdowns in the first six games of the season, completed nine of 15 passes for a season-high 235 yards and a school-record five touchdowns. Jeremy Lovelace caught three of the scoring passes, tying a school record, and Jeff Weber and Jacob Clark each caught one. Weber also rushed for 40 yards, had a 56-yard kickoff return, and converted all eight points after touchdown to run his county-leading total to 35.

The Mariners scored on four of five first-half possessions to build a 28-0 halftime lead. They needed only five plays in the third quarter to add three more scores. J.P. Lee scored on runs of five and 25 yards on his only two carries; no Mariner carried more than four times.
