Harvard-Westlake Completes Mission

Driver Ted Zepfel scored from the perimeter with 1:31 remaining in the game and Harvard-Westlake High clinched its 13th consecutive Mission League boys’ water polo championship with a 9-8 victory over Loyola on Wednesday at Harvard-Westlake.

Goalie Joe Axlerad of Harvard-Westlake (15-4, 4-0 in league play) had four of his 17 saves after Zepfel’s goal.

Mike Gross scored five goals for the Wolverines, who are ranked fifth in Southern Section Division I.

Harvard-Westlake travels to San Jose for the State Invitational on Friday.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

San Marino 11, Calabasas 7--The Coyotes won seven of nine doubles matches but lost all nine singles sets in a nonleague rematch of the Southern Section Division IV final last year at San Marino (14-2).

“Their singles players are nails,” said Coach Bill Bellatty of Calabasas (14-3), which lost to the Titans, 12-6, last year.

The Coyotes, ranked No. 2 in Division IV this season, rallied against top-ranked San Marino (14-2) before falling short.

Andrea Leewong and Vanessa Everly, playing together for the first time this year at No. 1 doubles, lost only two games in three sets.

Chloe Solomon and Hilary Leewong, playing No. 2 doubles, won two sets, as did the No. 3 unit of Marisa Kagan and Jacki Yano, who normally play singles for Calabasas.

Camarillo 14, Oxnard 4--The Scorpions (13-5, 8-0) won all nine singles sets in a Marmonte League match at Camarillo.

Lauren Gaona, playing at No. 1 singles, lost only one game in three sets, Michelle Alvarez dropped only three and Alexandra Lee lost only four.

Jackie Singer and Olivia Thomas swept three sets for the Yellowjackets (5-10, 3-4) at No. 1 doubles.

COLLEGE WRESTLING

Moorpark 31, Bakersfield 9--The Raiders, ranked first in the state coaches poll, used a pin, two major decisions, a technical fall and a forfeit to defeat the third-ranked Renegades in a Western State Conference match at Bakersfield.

The five matches resulted in an 11-point swing for Moorpark (11-2, 3-0).

Heavyweight Chris Jansen pinned Dewayne Hogan in 3:50, Adam Benshea won by forfeit at 197 pounds, and Saul Lucatero scored the technical fall over David Baker at 149 pounds, 20-5.

Yonas Waldu scored a major decision over John Dickerson at 133 pounds, 18-5, and Eddie Lucatero defeated Fred Gutierrez by major decision at 157 pounds, 20-7.

Bakersfield is 5-4-1, 1-1.

MEN’S SOCCER

Cal Lutheran 3, Claremont-Mudd 2--Forward Andrew Montinegro scored his second goal of the game 11 seconds into overtime for the Kingsmen in a Southern California Interscholastic Athletic Conference game at Cal Lutheran.

Montinegro’s first goal came with 40 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

Claremont-Mudd (11-1, 10-1) would have won the SCIAC title and a berth in the NCAA Division III playoffs with a victory.

Cal Lutheran (11-6, 8-3) is third in the conference.
