Belden Leads Sailor Victory

Peter Belden scored four goals and had five steals, leading Newport Harbor to a 10-5 victory over North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake in the second round of the John Felix Memorial boys’ water polo invitational Friday at Lynbrook High in San Jose.

The Sailors (22-1) advance to today’s quarterfinals to play San Diego Coronado, which beat Corona del Mar, 8-7. The championship game is today.

Ryan Cook scored five goals for Newport Harbor, ranked No. 1 in Orange County. Goalkeeper Tim Birdsong, who had five saves, also had three assists.

Newport Harbor defeated Atherton Menlo, 11-7, in a first-round game.

In other tournament games:

No. 2 Foothill 13, San Jose Bellarmine 7--After edging Davis, 7-5, in the first round, Foothill took control early in the second round, taking a 9-2 lead at halftime.

“We played really bad in our first game,” Foothill Coach Jim Brumm said. “Our guys were missing their shots in the morning, but making their shots in the afternoon.”

Pat Logan had six goals and Blake Seymour and Wes Fox each had two.

Foothill (15-6) plays defending champion Long Beach Wilson, which defeated No. 4 San Clemente, 16-4.

In Sea View League boys’ cross-country:

No. 10 Newport Harbor wins five-way dual meet--Jesse Armijo placed first for Aliso Niguel, winning in 15 minutes 37 seconds, on the three-mile course at Woodbridge. Newport Harbor (8-0), led by Chris McMillen (15:51), had five runners finish in the top 10.

In Sea View League girls’ cross-country:

No. 2 Woodbridge wins five-way dual meet--Woodbridge (8-0) won all four dual meets led by Nicole Scott (18:09) and six other top-10 finishers. Amber Steen won the three-mile race at Woodbridge, running 17:56 for No. 6 Newport Harbor (6-2).
