GOLF

* Jody Duclos of Moorpark shot 78 and Linda Pearson of Glendale finished at 79 on Thursday at Pauma Valley Country Club to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship, for players 25 and older.

The 13th U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur will be played Oct. 2-7 at Cherokee Country Club in Atlanta.

* Ina Kim, 15 of Encino was selected to play for the United States in the Junior Match against Europe on Sept. 20-22 on the Blue Course at New Seabury Country Club in New Seabury, Mass.

Each squad consists of four boys and four girls born in 1983 or later and two boys and two girls born in 1981 and 1982. The U.S. squad was selected on the basis of the Golfweek/Titleist rankings.

* The Golden League will begin play in girls’ golf this season, with each of the six member schools fielding teams. The first league matches will be played later this month.

FOOTBALL

* Linebacker Jake Scott of Buena High is recovering from shoulder surgery and is not expected to play in the Bulldogs’ opener next Thursday at Westlake.

Scott, the team’s leading tackler last season, might be back for the Sept. 17 game against Rio Mesa.

* The Valley-based California Dolphins professional minor league football team will open its season at 7 tonight against the North Bay Falcons of the Bay Area at Van Nuys High.

BASKETBALL

* Latricia Fleming, the Foothill League’s co-most valuable player and a Times’ All-Valley selection, has left Canyon High and moved to Fontana.

The Cowboys received more bad news recently when starting guard Justina Kahaku announced she will not play basketball to concentrate on softball.

VOLLEYBALL

* Steve Thompson, baseball coach at Granada Hills High, will coach the girls’ volleyball team this season.

He replaces Patti Leiblie, who moved out of the area.

* The Southern California Stealth Gold, an 18-and-under softball team, will hold tryouts from 9 a.m.-noon on Sept. 18-19 at Chaminade Middle School in Chatsworth.
