HIGH SCHOOL PREVIEW : AT A GLANCE / Field Hockey

Share

* The Proven: Edison finished last season unbeaten, winning the Sunset League championship and its fourth Tournament of Champions title. Most coaches pick the Chargers as the team to beat this season. Huntington Beach reached the Tournament of Champions final last year, and Coach Pacita Vasquez is expecting a banner year as the majority of her team is returning. Newport Harbor also looks like a team to be reckoned with. Coach Sharon Wolfe is back after a year off and she expects her strong group of newcomers to battle for the league title.

* The Promising: Marina is always competitive, but was disappointed with a first-round loss in last year’s Tournament of Champions. This season, Coach Shelly Luth returns eight starters and could take a run at the top three teams. Angie Eifert led Santiago to an upset over La Verne Bonita in the tournament title game in 1997. But Eifert returned to her home in Pennsylvania and Sarah Anderson, the goalkeeper coach, becomes Santiago’s third coach in four years.

* Preseason Top 5: 1. Edison--Looking for fifth tournament title overall. 2. Huntington Beach--Could prove to be the best of the bunch; 3. Newport Harbor--Coach returns, and so does team to title hunt; 4. Marina--Features the county’s best goalkeeper in Melissa White; 5. Santiago--Good team, but another new coach.
