COLLEGE FOOTBALL / WEEK 2 : Opener’s a Brees for Purdue, 47-13
Drew Brees and No. 22-ranked Purdue gave Central Florida a taste of how tough it could be without Daunte Culpepper this season.
Brees threw for 273 yards and four touchdowns Saturday night in a season-opening 47-13 victory that extended the Boilermakers’ win streak to seven--their longest since 1979.
Brees picked up up where he left off in a record-breaking sophomore season, completing 26 of 43 passes, including touchdowns of 27 yards to Chris Daniels, 18 to Tim Stratton, two to Randall Lane and 22 to Vinny Sutherland.
Brees threw for 3,753 yards and 36 touchdowns last season.
“I felt really comfortable out there,” said Brees. “There was no time when I felt pressure.”
The same couldn’t be said for Central Florida quarterback Vic Penn, a junior college transfer taking over for Culpepper--the eleventh overall selection in this year’s NFL draft by the Minnesota Vikings.
Penn completed 24 of 45 passes for 250 yards and a touchdown, but was sacked four times, had four interceptions and lost a fumble.
It doesn’t figure to get any easier for Penn and Central Florida, which plays road games at No. 4 Florida, No. 10 Georgia Tech and No. 12 Georgia the next three weeks.
Safety Adrian Beasley set up two Purdue touchdowns with interceptions, and Mike Rose returned an interception 25 yards for a touchdown.
Purdue also got a touchdown pass from kicker Travis Dorsch, who threw to Chris Randolph after his 22-yard field goal attempt was blocked in the third quarter.
