Harris Helps Woodbridge to Victory

Shane Harris started his senior season in a spectacular way by making several big plays to help Woodbridge beat Pacifica, 21-20, Thursday night at Orange Coast College.

Harris’ final key play came after Pacifica’s Javon Smith scored on a one-yard run with 24 seconds left to cut Woodbridge’s lead to 21-20.

Pacific Coach Bill Craven debated but decided to kick for the extra point. “We felt the kids worked so hard they didn’t deserve to lose.”

But a high snap forced holder Jacob Clark to run around the right side and directly into Harris.

“I had the tight end on the play, so I was free to make the tackle,” said Harris, who helped the Warriors to the Southern Section Division VI title last season. “We have a young team and we knew [the game] was going to be like this.”

Harris got Woodbridge (1-0) off to a fast start by breaking a tackle on the first play from scrimmage and going 45 yards for a score.

He later gave Woodbridge a 21-7 lead when he threw a 27-yard touchdown pass on a halfback option and caught the two-point conversion pass with 1:30 left in the half. He also had an interception.

Pacifica (0-1) dominated the second half and scored midway through the third quarter when Jarred Kemp raced 35 yards for a touchdown.

The next touchdown was set up when Pacifica’s Alfonso Auelua tackled Harris, who was back to punt. The Mariners took over at the Woodbridge 36 with 2:42 to play.

Jeremy Lovelace went high at the eight-yard line to catch a 29-yard pass from Joey Fuski on a third-down play.
