VALLEY / VENTURA COUNTY SPORTS : ROUNDUP : Nguyen Zeros In, Campbell Hall Wins

No. 1 player Melissa Nguyen of Campbell Hall did not lose a point in one of her three 6-0 victories and the Division V Vikings defeated Division I Crescenta Valley, 10-8, in a nonleague season opener Friday at Crescenta Valley.

Campbell Hall also got a sweep by Sarah Senechal and Bri Delamarter at No. 1 doubles.

Campbell Hall’s Jackie Stein and Emily Bruckner won four of the last five games to win their third set, 7-5, after two losses.

Westlake 15, Hart 3--No. 3 Catharine Irvin, a member of Westlake’s 17-1 junior varsity team last season, surrendered only four games in sweeping three opponents for the Warriors in a season-opening victory over Hart at North Ranch Country Club.

Hart got all of its victories from the No. 1 doubles team of Jamie Ladd and Heidi Gragg, a transfer from Quartz Hill.

Quartz Hill 11, Royal 7--No. 1 Patti Young dropped only one game in her last two sets and swept three opponents for the Rebels (2-0) in a nonleague victory at Quartz Hill.

Young had a 5-2 lead over No. 1 Annie Tran, who tied the set, 5-5, before Young won the last two games to help Quartz Hill take 5-1 lead in the first round of the round-robin competition.

Royal (0-1) rallied to within 7-5 after the second round of play. But the Rebels, who have six seniors among their nine players, won four of the final six sets.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

CS Long Beach def. CS Northridge, 15-2, 15-3, 15-12--The Matadors (1-1) were swept by No. 4 Long Beach State (6-0).

In the third game the 49ers had match point at 14-6, but Northridge countered with six points before Long Beach secured the sweep.

Laura Szymanski had 11 kills and six digs for Northridge.

MEN’S SOCCER

Cal Lutheran 1, UC Santa Cruz 0--Jose Melgoza scored in the 23rd minute and Cal Lutheran won its season opener at UC Santa Cruz.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

UC Santa Cruz 3, Cal Lutheran 2--Alix Rucinski scored her second goal of the season in the 74th minute to tie it at 2 as Cal Lutheran (1-1) wiped out a an early 2-0 deficit before losing at UC Santa Cruz. Betsy Fisch also scored for the Regals.
