Santa Ana 16, Sonora 7--Reserve quarterback Rogelio Martinez engineered two fourth-quarter touchdown drives for Santa Ana at Santa Ana Stadium.

With the Saint offense sputtering with 58 yards and four turnovers, Coach Jesse Gomez replaced starting quarterback Lee Lopez with Martinez late in the third quarter.

“He provided the spark we needed,” said Gomez, making his debut as a varsity head coach.

Martinez came in with the Saints on their five-yard line and drove Santa Ana 95 yards in 15 plays. Reynoldo Flores scored on a 15-yard run to cut the Sonora lead to 7-6. Sonora stopped the two-point conversion try but was called for pass interference and the Saints took advantage of the second chance. Martinez scored over right guard for the conversion to give Santa Ana an 8-7 lead.

Sonora scored in the first quarter on a 35-yard interception return by Nathan Fitzgerald.

Martinez, who had a touchdown pass to Luis Bustamonte called back because of a penalty late in the game, completed five of eight for 105 yards.
