Notre Dame High’s dominating defense was at the top of its game Friday night.

Only a late touchdown run against the Knights’ third-string defense prevented a second consecutive shutout for Notre Dame in a 37-6 nonleague victory over visiting Burroughs.

Notre Dame (2-0), ranked No. 1 in the region by The Times, forced three turnovers and had three sacks. Defensive end Travis Johnson led the way with one sack and he hurried quarterback Joe Kroells of Burroughs twice.

Johnson scored the first touchdown on a one-yard run early in the first quarter.

Burroughs (0-2) crossed midfield for the first time with under four minutes to play. Kroells, who was harassed all night by the defensive line, completed one of six passes for minus-one yard at in the first half.

Kroells finished five of 16 for 75 yards, with two interceptions.

Notre Dame’s offense was in sync from the start, scoring on its first three possessions and taking a 20-0 lead.

Knight fullback Patrick Wade rushed for 99 yards in nine carries, including an 11-yard touchdown. Tailback Trevin Lund, who had 63 yards in 15 carries, added touchdown runs of one and three yards.

“Our line was huge tonight,” said Wade, who had an interception. “I don’t think their front line touched me except maybe one time tonight.”

In a matchup of the Beckmann brothers, Burroughs linebacker Randy got the best statistically of Phil, a defensive back for Notre Dame.

Randy had 14 tackles and forced one fumble. Phil finished with two tackles and took over at quarterback for one series for starter Jonathan Brewster.
