Burroughs in Deep at Harvard-Westlake

Ted Zebfel scored two of his three goals in the third quarter to help Harvard-Westlake High trounce Burroughs, 9-1, on Friday in the quarterfinals of the Jim Toring Memorial water polo tournament at Harvard-Westlake.

Burroughs (6-2) pulled to within 4-1 on a goal by Jason Falitz three minutes into the third quarter, but Harvard-Westlake responded with two more goals in the quarter.

Mike Gross had three goals for the Wolverines, Brian Ault added two goals and Jim Singleton had one.

Joe Axelrad made 16 saves for Harvard-Westlake.

Bart Bagdasaryan had six saves for Burroughs, which outshot the Wolverines, 28-24.

Crescenta Valley 15, Notre Dame 5--Jeff Little scored five goals and Carlos Pelayo four for the Falcons in a Jim Toring tournament quarterfinal at Harvard-Westlake.

Goalie Mike Hoy made 12 saves for the Falcons (3-0), who play Harvard-Westlake in a semifinal match today at 10:30 a.m.

Rio Mesa 11, Calabasas 10--Nick Glaze took a rebound and scored from two meters with one second remaining to cap a Spartan rally in a nonleague match at Calabasas.

Chris Hussain, who scored five goals for the Coyotes (2-4) tied the game with 1:18 left.

Trevor Owens had four goals and goalie Dan Improta scored on a full-court shot just before halftime for Rio Mesa (1-1), which rallied from a 9-6 fourth-quarter deficit. Improta made 17 saves.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Westlake 11, La Reina 7--Jessica Blau swept three sets at No. 1 singles and the Warriors (2-0) won a nonleague match at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village.

Blau defeated Stephanie Matthews, 6-4, Kathryn Miester, 6-2, and beat Emily Lennox, 6-4.

Erin Miester and Beth Hutchinson won two of three sets at No. 1 doubles for La Reina (2-2).

Simi Valley 11, Oak Park 7--The Pioneers’ No. 2 doubles team of Erica Adelstein and Maria Espinoza helped the Pioneers (4-0) win a nonleague match at Simi Valley.

Adelstein and Espinoza, who usually play at No. 1, defeated previously unbeaten Erica Levy and Ali Meisel, 6-4.

With the set tied, 3-3, the teams went to 10 deuces before Adelstein and Espinoza took the game and held serve.

St. Bonaventure 10, Nordhoff 8--The No. 1 doubles team of Katherine Edsall and Catherine Hillman won two of three sets to help the Seraphs (4-0) take a 5-1 lead in the first round of round-robin competition at Nordhoff.

MEN’S SOCCER

Cal Lutheran 5, Hope International 1--Andrew Montenegro had two assists and the Kingsmen (3-0) scored five consecutive goals in a nonconference match at Cal Lutheran.

Five Cal Lutheran players scored.

Vanderbilt 3, CS Northridge 2--Michael Preis scored both goals for the Matadors in a first-round game at the Vanderbilt tournament.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Moorpark 5, Glendale 0--Amanda Light scored three goals and Victoria Howard had two assists for Moorpark (4-2) in a Western State Conference opener at the Glendale Sports Complex.
