PREP ROUNDUP : Exon Helps Woodbridge Get Past No. 2 Mater Dei

Elizabeth Exon’s victory in the final round tied the match on sets and enabled fifth-ranked Woodbridge to defeat No. 2 Mater Dei on games, 81-75, in a nonleague girls’ tennis match Thursday at Mater Dei.

Exon, playing at No. 3 singles, defeated Mater Dei’s No. 2 singles player, Mary Hung, 6-4, to tie the score and lift the visiting Warriors (3-1) in games.

Mater Dei fell to 4-1.

In other nonleague tennis matches:

No. 3 Capistrano Valley 9, No. 6 Corona del Mar 9 (Capistrano Valley wins on games 78-71)--Leigh Ann Merryman and Jenny Bailey won their final sets in singles to tie the match. In doubles, Michelle Keese and Lauren Jones won their sets 6-3, 6-1, 6-1 for the Cougars (5-1). Corona del Mar fell to (2-4).

Marina 9, Costa Mesa 9 (Marina wins in games, 81-67)--Joanna Lim defeated Costa Mesa’s No. 3 singles player, 6-0, to tie the score, 9-9, for Marina. Costa Mesa led, 4-2, after the first round, but Marina rallied to tie the score, 6-6, after the second round.

In nonleague girls’ golf:

No. 3 Marina 135, Ocean View 140--Courtney Goebel shot four-over-par 40 for Marina (4-0) at Meadowlark.

No. 5 Los Alamitos 127, Downey 165--Medalist Jamie Oliver had one birdie, six pars and two bogeys en route to finishing with a one-over 37 at Downey to lead Los Alamitos (4-0). Michelle Eastlack followed with a 41 for the Griffins.

No. 1 University 123, No. 2 Santa Margarita 139--Sunny Lee shot a one-over 37 to lead University at Rancho San Joaquin. Lee birdied the third and ninth holes, and Angela Won shot a 42 for the Trojans (3-0).

Brenda Progar shot a 43 to lead Santa Margarita (2-3).

In Century League boys’ cross-country:

Foothill 25, No. 7 Villa Park 32--Augie Escobar ran the three-mile course at Irvine Park in 16:38 to finish first for Villa Park, but Foothill runners took third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh place to pull away with the victory. Foothill hadn’t beaten Villa Park (0-1, 0-1) in more than 10 years.

In the Sunset League:

No. 8 Edison 22, Los Alamitos 33--Scott Brandos took first in 16:41 to lead host Edison (4-0, 1-0). Kevin McCarter ran the three-mile course at Fairview Park in 16:50 to finish second for the Chargers.

In Century League girls’ cross-country:

No. 8 El Modena 23, Orange 37--Christine Eckstaedt finished first in 18:48 for El Modena (1-0) in the league opener.

No. 4 Foothill 16, Villa Park 46--Laura Strachan finished first in 19:42, followed by Katie Strachan, who completed the three-mile course at Irvine Park in 19:43 to lead visiting Foothill (1-0, 1-0).

In the Pacific Coast League:

No. 7 University 18, Estancia 40--Shey Manafian finished first in 18:28 and Jessica Howard was second in 18:29 for University (1-0) on Mason Park’s three-mile course.
