Woodbridge Ekes Out Girls’ Tennis Victory

Woodbridge, ranked second in Orange County, and 10th-ranked Santa Margarita each won nine sets, but Woodbridge had the advantage in games, 75-73, and won a nonleague girls’ tennis match Wednesday at Santa Margarita High.

Woodbridge (5-1) won although no singles player or doubles team swept its sets.

Erin Miller swept in singles, 6-1, 6-3, 6-1, for Santa Margarita (5-3).

In other nonleague matches:

Esperanza 13, Foothill 5--Kelly Six swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, to improve to 23-1 in singles this season for host Esperanza (7-1).

Fairmont 10, Whittier Christian 8--Bryn Sibold-Cohn swept her singles sets, dropping just one game, for Fairmont (4-3). Lauren Maltby won two of her three singles sets for Whittier Christian (2-7), coming back from a 2-4 deficit in the final set to win in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (9-7).

Katella 13, Savanna 8--Catherine Ricohermoso won both of her singles, 6-0, 6-3, and won her doubles match with Julie Hoces, 6-3, for Katella (6-3).

Los Amigos 10, Orange 8--Thy Phan and Guisela Lester swept at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, 6-1, 7-5, as Los Amigos (7-1) won seven of the nine doubles matches.

In Century League girls’ golf:

No. 4 Villa Park 129, El Modena 186--Priscilla Park birdied the fourth, fifth and seventh holes at Tustin Ranch to finish at two-over 38 for Villa Park (5-4, 2-0). Shelly Raworth also shot a 38 for the Spartans, making one birdie and five pars.

In the Ocean League:

Redondo Union 132, Ocean View 133--Elena Robles shot four-over 40 to win medalist honors for Redondo (6-0, 2-0).

Diane Scott had four pars and finished at 41 and Nicole Peralta made five pars to shoot 43 for Ocean View (5-4, 0-2).

In the Orange League:

Valencia 110, Downey 131--Nikki Glowin birdied the third and fourth holes and shot three-over 32 at Brea for host Valencia (7-0, 3-0).

In the Serra League:

No. 6 Mater Dei 117, Rosary 121--Heather McDermott birdied the fourth and eighth holes to shoot a four-over 36 at RiverView for Mater Dei (5-0, 1-0).

In the South Coast League:

Dana Hills 130, Trabuco Hills 146--Sophomore Carling Cho had one birdie, four pars and shot three-over 39 at Tijeras Creek for visiting Dana Hills (7-1, 2-0).

In the Sunset League:

No. 10 Esperanza 111, Huntington Beach 129--Brianna Burdon of Huntington Beach was the medalist with a 35 on the par-31 David L. Baker course.

Junior Lauren Wright, who shot 36, and freshman Kayley Parrett, who shot 37, led Esperanza (6-1, 2-0).

In nonleague girls’ golf:

No. 1 University 126, Edison 148--Angela Won birdied the first and fourth holes to shoot three-over 39 at Mile Square for University (5-0). Teammate Sunny Lee birdied the last hole to shoot 38 for Trojans.

In nonleague girls’ volleyball:

Sonora 3, Aliso Niguel 0--Alyson Merchant had 21 kills and Sarah Berokoff had 27 assists for Sonora in a 15-6, 15-6, 16-14 win.

In Serra League boys’ water polo:

No. 6 Servite 22, Mater Dei 11--Mike Moungian scored five goals for Servite (6-2, 1-0), which outscored Mater Dei, 13-4, in the first half.

In nonleague boys’ water polo:

El Modena 16, Los Amigos 0--Charlie Adams and Jeff Schwartz each scored three goals for host El Modena (4-4).

Santa Ana Valley 17, Sunny Hills 4--Fernando Garcia scored three of his seven goals in the fourth quarter and Abner Castorena added five goals for the host Falcons (7-2).

Troy 25, Orange 7--Ian Markstrum scored 10 goals for host Troy (6-1), which led, 14-3, at halftime.
