SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Considering it was chilly and breezy, sprinter Porchea Carroll of Rio Mesa High realized early this wasn’t going to be a record-breaking day.

So the junior focused on a more immediate goal.

She wanted to help the Spartans reach their goal of a Pacific View League dual meet track and field title.

Carroll and her teammates went a long way toward accomplishing it with a 75 1/2-51 1/2 victory Thursday over Camarillo at Rio Mesa.

It wasn’t the most impressive performance of the season for Carroll, who is fastest in the state in the 100- and 200-meter dashes this season.

But she still won three individual events, taking the 100 in 12 seconds, the 200 in 24.9 seconds and the long jump with a leap of 16-10. She also ran the first leg on the 400 relay team that won in 49.7.

“I knew I couldn’t [set a career record] because of the weather,” Carroll said.

“So I just went in trying to do my best for the team.”

The Spartans (6-0, 3-0 in league meets) clinched at least a share of the dual meet title.

Among the others who stepped up for Rio Mesa were Dawn Otani, who won the discus throw at 91-5 1/4 and finished second in the shotput, and freshman Monica Serrano, who placed second in the 1,600 and 3,200.

It was a disappointing finish for Camarillo (5-1, 3-1), which was hoping for its second consecutive league dual-meet title.

But the Scorpions received a brilliant individual performance by senior Lisa Wygant, who won four events. She took the 100-meter high hurdles in 15.6, the 300 low hurdles in 48.9, the triple jump at 34-10 1/2 and the high jump at 5-2.

“She’s just a great competitor,” said Coach Mary Perez of Camarillo. “She’s a little sore right now but she has some time to recover.”

In the boys’ meet, Rio Mesa (6-0, 3-0), trying for its second consecutive Pacific View dual-meet title, won 13 of 15 events in a 94-33 victory over Camarillo.

That sets up a showdown against Hueneme (3-0 in league meets) for the title April 20 at Rio Mesa.

Freshman Phillip Reid of Rio Mesa, the league cross-country champion, took the 1,600 in 4:37.9 and the 3,200 in 10:20.7.

Other double winners for Rio Mesa were Diran Balekian in the 300 intermediate hurdles and the 400, Mike Liranzo in the 100 and 200 and Tunde Alonge in the triple jump and high jump.

Ryan Creadle had the only victories for the Camarillo boys at 48-4 in the shot and 146-7 in the discus.
