Esperanza Boys Win 1,600 Relay to Defeat Edison

Esperanza won the final event to defeat Edison, 69-66, in a Sunset League boys’ track and field meet Thursday at Esperanza.

The Aztecs’ 1,600 relay team of Darren Manska, Keith Fishberg, George Solomos and Robert Morrell completed four laps in 3 minutes 29.7 seconds to erase a two-point deficit and give Esperanza the victory over the Chargers for the second consecutive season.

Esperanza (3-0 in league) was led by Ryan Bousquet, who won the 800 in 2:05.7, the 1,600 in 4:37.8 and the 3,200 in 9:47.9.

Darryl Poston won the 100 (11.1) and 200 (22.5) for Edison (2-1).

In the Empire League:

Katella 77, Cypress 54--Nick Brown won the 200 (22.6) and 400 (51.3) and Danny Mejia won the 800 (2:05.2) and 3,200 (10:07.4) for Katella (3-0 in league).

Clarence Moore jumped 44-6 to win the triple jump for Cypress (2-1).

In the Orange League:

Western 73, Brea Olinda 61--The Pioneers defeated Brea Olinda for the first time in 15 years. Jake Chavira provided key points by winning the shotput (48-2) and discus (150-2) with personal-best efforts.

In the Sea View League:

Laguna Hills 75, Aliso Niguel 60--Martin Rocha won the 1,600 (4:37) and 3,200 (10:20) to lead Laguna Hills (2-1 in league).

Chris Bernard won the 200 (22.9), 400 (50.6) and triple jump (42-8 1/2) for Aliso Niguel (2-2-1, 0-1-1).

Newport Harbor 89, Woodbridge 46--Trevor Jones led the Sailors with victories in the 100 (11.1), 200 (22.5), 110 hurdles (14.5) and 300 hurdles (38.9).

In the Serra League:

Santa Margarita 81, Mater Dei 53--Jim Lunnen cleared 6-7 to win the high jump and Phil Sardis won the 200 (23.01) and 400 (51.10) for Santa Margarita (7-0, 2-0). Mater Dei is 1-1 in league.

In Sea View League girls’ track:

Woodbridge 77, Newport Harbor 59--Michelle Sanford won the 100 (12.6), long jump (16-8 3/4) and triple jump (37-6 3/4) for Woodbridge (4-1, 3-0).

In the Serra League:

Santa Margarita 83, Mater Dei 53--Freshman Kelsey Carroll tied the Santa Margarita record in the high jump with a winning height of 5-2. Christy Von Der Ahe won the triple jump (34-6 1/2) and pole vault (11-0) for Santa Margarita (4-0, 2-0).

In the Sunset League:

Esperanza 76, Edison 60--Julie Handy won the 100 hurdles (16.4) and 300 hurdles (48.4) and Kristen Thompson won the shotput (34-9 3/4) and discus (135-5) for Esperanza (3-0 in league).
