The Matadors (3-1) accumulated 135 points to defeat Fresno State (112) and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (92) in dual competition.

James, an All-Big Sky Conference runner indoors and outdoors last year, beat Melissa Flynn of Cal Poly by a stride to win the 800 in 2:12.52. In the 1,500 race, she finished in 4:39.94--more than four seconds faster than runner-up Jasmine Hall of Cal Poly, who timed 4:44.03.

Perhaps the most impressive performance was turned in by redshirt freshman Frances Santin of Northridge, who aggravated a foot injury but still won the 400 hurdles in 58.79--her fastest time ever. Santin was 4.94 seconds ahead of Sarah Bonilla of Cal Poly.

“I suffered a light stress fracture to the top of my left foot hurdling at the start of the season, and this is only my second race since then,” said Santin, a two-time City Section champion in the 300 hurdles at Taft. “My foot was bothering me down the stretch. Otherwise, I would have run even faster.”

Santin was unable to run the second leg of the 1,600 relay because of her injury. LaShaunda Fowler replaced Santin and the Matadors finished third in 3:50.77.

Brandi Prieto of Northridge won the 100 hurdles in 14.11and Fowler was second in 14.24.

Prieto won the triple jump with a mark of 42-2 3/4 and finished second in the long jump behind teammate Dee Scott, who jumped 18-8 3/4.

Carol Stevenson won the hammer throw for Northridge at 167-7.

The Matador men’s team finished third with 81 points behind Cal Poly (142) and Fresno State (136).
