Hudgins Pitches His Second No-Hitter

Senior John Hudgins pitched his second no-hitter of the season as Mission Viejo defeated Capistrano Valley, 1-0, in South Coast League baseball Tuesday.

The Stanford-bound Hudgins had 12 strikeouts and one walk in the seven innings he pitched at Mission Viejo. His last no-hitter was a five-inning game against Dana Hills on March 18.

Hudgins was also responsible for the winning run, knocking in Jason Ferrell in the first inning. Mission Viejo is 9-4, 5-3.

In other South Coast League games:

El Toro 4, San Clemente 2--Conner Gleason went the distance for host El Toro (8-4-1, 5-3), giving up no earned runs and walking only one.

All six runs scored in the game were unearned as each team made five errors.

No. 8 Trabuco Hills 9, Dana Hills 2--Mike Thompson had two hits and three RBIs and Mike Busane had two hits, scored two runs and drove in a run for the Mustangs (11-4, 7-1) at Dana Hills.

In the Gladstone tournament:

Troy 11, Pasadena Muir 1 (5, mercy)--Luis Bernal went four for four with a triple, four RBIs and scored three runs for the Warriors in the second-round game.

Brian Campbell struck out five en route to a three-hitter for Troy (4-11).

In the Century League:

No. 1 Villa Park 12, El Modena 2 (6, mercy)--Senior Brandon Averill got the win and his brother, sophomore Erik, picked up the save for host Villa Park (14-1, 8-0). Brandon also had a hit and two RBIs.

Foothill 11, Canyon 1 (5, mercy)--Mike Castillo pitched a four-hitter and Chad Bigler had a two-run home run and three RBIs for host Foothill (7-8, 4-4).

In the Golden West League:

Santa Ana 4, Saddleback 2--Eric Perez had two RBIs and Derrek Castle struck out six en route to the victory for the host Saints (5-10, 1-5).

Ray Flores scored twice and stole home for Santa Ana.

Westminster 13, Ocean View 8--Jeff Kerley had three hits with a home run and four RBIs to lead Westminster (8-6, 5-1), which has won seven straight games.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Estancia 9, Laguna Beach 4--Armando Ortiz went the distance for the win, striking out nine and Matt Mueller had a home run and two RBIs for visiting Estancia (6-8, 2-5).

University 11, Costa Mesa 1 (5, mercy)--Kevin Conlin had three hits, including a double, triple and home run, driving in four runs for the Trojans at University.

Matt Gamble struck out eight and walked none, earning his fourth victory for University (11-3, 5-0). Shortstop Jordan Cumsky had three hits and three RBIs.

In the Sea View League:

No. 6 Irvine 8, Newport Harbor 3--Terry Parker had a triple, home run and four RBIs for the Vaqueros at Irvine.

Derrek Smith pitched a one-hitter, striking out four for the win. Alex Park, who has a five-game hitting streak, had two hits and two runs scored.

Irvine improved to 12-3, 9-1 in league.

In the Sunset League:

No. 5 Esperanza 13, Huntington Beach 1--Kent Carpenter hit a double and home run with four RBIs and Robert Nesbitt had two hits, including a home run for the Aztecs (12-3, 5-3) at Esperanza.

Los Alamitos 11, Edison 4--John Hartford had a home run and three RBIs to lead host Los Alamitos (9-6, 5-3). Brandon Wells added two RBIs for the Griffins.

Marina 6, No. 2 Fountain Valley 2--Matt Costello was three for four with three RBIs for the visiting Vikings.

Marina (7-7, 4-4) took an early lead in the second inning, scoring four runs, capped by Costello’s double that drove in Billy Searles from second. Searles had two RBIs.

Casey Janssen and Jeff Ault each had an RBI for Fountain Valley (6-2 in league). Freshman J.J. Valicenti struck out four in four innings for his first win in two starts for Marina.

In a nonleague game:

Santee Santana 4, Tustin 1--Chris Mazzi had two hits and two RBIs to lead visiting Santana.
